Insomnia Treated with Qing Ying Tang

清营汤治疗头昏失眠

Chinese Translation

Ling Liu Ru case study:  Yu xx, female, 48 years old, first clinical visit was on June of 1993.  (She) repeatedly had dizziness and poor sleep for 3 years.  She has treated the problem by taking 谷维素 and 安定 with some temporary relief.  However, it is easy to have relapses and the problem is getting severe.  Now the symptoms are dizziness, headache, vexation, irritability, sleeping less with more dreams, sometimes talking in her dream and even sleepwalking, feeling of distension and fullness in the chest and costal area, dry mouth without desire to drink, dry stool without bowel movement for three days, palpitation, nervousness, hot flashes with sweating, a red tongue with a scanty coat, and a pulse that is thin and rapid.  The pattern belongs to liver and kidney Yin vacuity, long term Qi constraint, with the constrain heat forced internally to the Ying level.  It is appropriate to clear the heat and let it seep through from the Ying level, rectify the Qi and open up the constrain.  The formula here follows the lead of Qing Ying Tang as principle:
Sang Ye, Jiu Hua, Xuan Shen, Mai Dong, Chuan Lian , and Bai Shao, 12 g each, Sheng Di18g, Zhu Ye, Yu Jin, 10g each, Gua Lou Ke and Ren 15g each, Chuan Xiong, Xiang Fu 9g each.
After taking 7 bags non stop, the patient was calm except for slight dizziness and headache, she already had bowel movements, and the rest of the symptoms are all reduced.  After continuously taking 7 more bags, symptoms disappeared and she stopped taking the herbs.
Note:  this case belong to the pattern of liver and kidney Yin vacuity, the Yin body of the liver is insufficient but its Yang function is hyperactive, its free coursing is obstructed, the depressed wood transform to fire, the constrained fire is forced internally to the Ying level and disturbs the heart Ying.  Therefore select Xiang Fu, Chuan Lian Zi, Yu Jin, and Chuan Xiong to rectify the Qi and move the blood to treat the root.  Using Qing Ying Tang let the heat seep out to the Qi level in order to provide the outlet for the pathogen.  When the Qi mechanism resumes its free flow, the constrained heat was drained out, Ying Yin return to calmness, and the effective result appeared.
