Chinese Medical Language
These classes
provide three years of practical instruction in
medical Chinese. These courses have three primary goals: First, to
provide the ability to access modern Chinese medical resources in order
to obtain additional information for the treatment of patients. Second,
to develop a deeper understanding of Chinese medicine and culture
through language study. Third, to provide sufficient skill in both
recognition and pronunciation of herbs for communication purposes with
Chinese physicians.

In this class students are introduced to the basics of classical Chinese language, in the context of medicine, by studying selections from the Shäng Hán Lùn, the Jïn Guì Yào Lüè, and the Shén Nóng Bên Câo Jïng. The focus of the course will be on dictionary usage, basic pronunciation, and basic grammar, as well as developing a core vocabulary set. The emphasis is on providing an overall understanding of the characteristics of Classical Chinese.

In this class students continue to study the basics of classical Chinese and essential medical terms, Chinese characters and pronunciation of herbs that are being studied concurrently in other courses. The emphasis is on expanding medical terms and expressions found in the Shäng Hán Lùn, the Jïn Guì Yào Lüè, and the Shén Nóng Bên Câo Jïng.

In this class students continue to study classical Chinese and essential medical terms, Chinese characters and pronunciation of herbs that are being studied concurrently in other courses. The emphasis is on expanding understanding of the Shäng Hán Lùn and the Jïn Guì Yào Lüè, as well as beginning to read relevant cases from the classical literature.

Students continue to enhance their understanding of grammar and command of vocabularies. The format of the class is reading Chinese articles on the topics being concurrently studied in the therapeutics courses. The focus is on increasing the speed of reading through structured exercises.

Classes focus on a series of advanced grammar and expressions by translating articles from journals and books dealing with topics being studied in the therapeutics courses.
