Professional Issues in Practice

Developing a private practice, providing public education and understanding how to communicate with patients and other health care providers are crucial skills for a practitioner of acupuncture and Oriental medicine. These seminars explore the patient/physician relationship, the ethical and legal aspects of practice and the fundamentals of setting up a practice.  Familiarization with research in Oriental medicine provides the student with information for the public as well as the skills to critique research studies in the field.  


720 Medical History and Ethics
30 hours 2 credit

This course covers legal and ethical aspects of practice as well as relations with other health care professionals and the politics of health care in America today.  It also covers historical perspectives on medicine and healing including the cultural impact on medical therapeutics and ethical thought.


721 Practice Management 30 hours 2 credits

This course covers the skills needed to set up and maintain a private practice including licensing, bookkeeping, kinds of insurance, taxes, office organization, public speaking and advertising.


722 Research in Oriental Medicine 15 hours 1 credit

This course presents basic research methodologies used in Oriental medicine.  Examples of well-designed research are presented along with ways to understand and critique research literature in Oriental medicine.


724 Communication Skills
30 hours 2 credits

This course initially provides methods for developing listening/communication skills and establishing rapport with patients. It then presents information on how to handle emotionally disturbed patients and identify signs that may indicate the need for a mental health referral.
