Admissions
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine must demonstrate they have completed the following academic prerequisites before entry into the program:
- Three years of college study at the baccalaureate level with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA
- (90 semester / 135 quarter credits).
- 3 semester credits of college coursework in General Biology (lab not required)
- 3 semester credits of college coursework in Chemistry (lab not required)
- 3 semester credits of college coursework in Psychology (lab not required)
- 8 semester credits in Anatomy and Physiology with a lab component.
- Current Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification.
The Seattle Institute has a rolling admissions policy that allows
the school to consider early admissions applicants. The school accepts
applications for admission beginning in October for entry into the
program the following September. Applicants with plans to complete some
prerequisites prior to entry into the program may be accepted on a
contingency basis. Interviews are scheduled each month through the
winter to meet with qualified applicants. Decisions regarding
acceptance are made within two weeks of the interview. Applicants are
accepted until the class is full. Additional applicants may be
considered on a wait-list basis. Candidates for admission must
demonstrate maturity, academic ability and sincerity to enter the field
of Oriental medicine.
Materials required for application:
- Completed SIOM application with recent photo.
- Official transcripts of prior education sent directly to SIOM from the originating institution. Transcripts from other countries must be translated into English and evaluated by a credential-evaluation service. We suggest World Education Service (www.wes.org).
- Essay describing reasons for choosing this field and the Seattle Institute.
- Statement of plans to fulfill financial obligations.
- $50 application fee (non-refundable).
English Language Requirement: All classes are taught in English. If the Admissions Committee has any concerns regarding the applicant's ability to understand English, the applicant will be required to score at least 500 on the PBT or 173 on the CPT of the TOEFL exam. The applicant may also be asked to take the Test for Spoken English (TSE).
Transfer Credit to SIOM: All
applicants to the SIOM program are expected to enter at the beginning
of the program. There are provisions for students to apply for credit
for some biomedical science and Chinese language courses. Students must
supply records of college credit for similar course work and may be required to demonstrate competence in the required material.
