Offsite Clinics: Clinic Externships
The Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine is very proud of the relationships that we have established with a small number of community clinics around Seattle that provide medical services to groups of patients in need. These community clinics provide our students with an opportunity to work with groups of people who may not have the ability or the resources to come in to our main clinic and it provides SIOM with a great opportunity to give back to the local community. SIOM students provide low- or no-cost acupuncture treatments to ACRS clients under the supervision of Sachiko Nakano, Licensed Acupuncturist.
ACRS helps clients attain the highest levels of self-sufficiency in western society, while maintaining their cultural identity. In most cases, clients are served by professional staff who speak the same language and come from the same culture. ACRS provides the following programs in a culturally appropriate setting in order to improve the lives of Asian Pacific Americans: Aging and Adult Services; Children, Youth and Families Program; Comprehensive Adult Mental Health; Consultation and Education; Domestic Violence Intervention and Education - Batterers Treatment; Senior Nutrition, Emergency Feeding and Food Bank; Substance Abuse Treatment; Information and Referral; International District Legal Clinic; Naturalization Program; Vocational and Employment Services.

SIOM students provide low- or no-cost acupuncture treatments to Consejo clients under the supervision of Vay-Chee Cheng, Licensed Acupuncturist.
Consejo is a private, not for profit organization, founded in 1978 to provide culturally competent mental health and family support services in Western Washington. Services focus on, but are not limited to the Hispanic/Latino community. Consejo is committed to providing education, prevention, treatment and support services related to mental health, substance abuse and domestic violence. Consejo also provides vocational rehabilitation services and employment services to Latinos living in the King County area. Consejo also operates two transitional housing programs, one for homeless/mentally ill patients and the other one for victims of domestic violence.
When a family member suffers from mental illness or substance abuse; it frequently aggravates existing family problems, such as poverty, immigration issues, culture clash, and lack of English skills. Consejo’s clientele is approximately 95% Spanish-speaking. They use an interdependent treatment model in which clients feel accepted and emotionally secure, experience personal growth, and develop new skills. This model empowers clients to participate in the community at their highest level of functioning.

SIOM students provide acupuncture treatment using the NADA (National Acupuncture Detox Association: www.acudetox.com) protocols. Through coursework and on-site experience, our students provide a crucial service to this community and achieve the ability to be certified by NADA. Our students practice under the supervision of Rachel Diaz, Licensed Acupuncturist.
For over 30 years Evergreen Treatment Services has been providing evidence-based addiction treatment services to the citizens of Western Washington. ETS is a private, non-profit organization licensed as an outpatient opioid treatment program. The agency currently serves over 900 patients in four methadone clinics located in King County and a newly opened clinic in Thurston County.
The agency and its staff are actively involved in a number of federally-funded research projects designed to enhance the effectiveness of addiction treatment and improve public health and safety. ETS has also been a pioneer in using acupuncture services as an adjunct to other treatment services.
