The patients have all been diagnosed with liver cancer. There were 4 groups, each with 20 patients, whom underwent chemo embolization procedure (TACE). The Seldinger method was used in which a canula was place percutaneously into the femoral artery. 10-20 mL of an embolism chemical preparation along with three types of chemotherapy including 5-fu pyrimidine 500 mg, were then administered. Three days before TACE, the 1st group used one pill of a derivative of ren shen (each pill containing 200mg) and the steroid dexamethasone (each pill containing 2.25 mg). The second and third groups used the above mentioned eastern and western medications along with a one capsule of placebo capsule; the fourth group only used 2 placebo pills. The placebo doses were taken two times per day orally. On the fourth day, the TACE procedure was performed. Results: 1st group had distinct reduction in nausea, vomiting and fever. The symptoms of liver area pain fluctuated but in general the relief of symptoms was sustained for a period of time.

One study group had the TCM pattern of Phlegm and Qi mutually obstructed. This group was given Gua Lou Xie Bai Tang modified: gua lou 15g, xie bai, ban xie, yu jin, e zhu, zhe bei mu, sha ren, shi shi, hou po each 10g, dang shen 20g, sheng jiang huang lian 6g. For the Liver kidney yin vacuity pattern, a modification of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan was given: sheng di, fu ling each 12g, shan yao, ze xie, dan pi, dang gui, sha shen, chaos hen qu, each 10g, shan zhu ru, mu xiang, both 6g, dan shen, huang qin, both 20g. One packet per day was water decocted and taken. Together with the control group, there were 40 individuals, all of which used DF Formula: DDP 30 mg/m2 every 1 to 3 days, 5-fu 500 mg/m2 and CF 150 mg/ m2 given every 1 to 5 days. One treatment course was 21 days, and 4 treatment courses were given. Results: Full remission of the first and second groups 5 individuals, 3 individuals respectively; Partial remission was 25 individuals, 16 individuals respectively; Stable condition was 6 individuals, 16 individuals respectively; disease progression was 4 individuals, 5 individuals respectively. Summary of effectively: 75% and 47% respectively (P<0.05). One year survival rate was 68% and 52% respectively. Two year survival rate was 41% and 30% respectively.

One study group had the TCM pattern of Damp Heat pouring down, and were given che qian zi 10g, pu xu, sheng ce bai ye, shao ji, tu fu ling, each 15g, hua shi, dan shu ye, sheng ye ye ren, gong ying, each 30g, qu mai, sheng di, sheng ai ye each 20g, su zi 12g, gan cao shao 60g. The pattern of weak Spleen and Kidney used shu di, ze xie both 15g, shan yao, xian yu tan both 20g, prepared fu zi 3g, rou gui 6g. The pattern of Damp Phlegm Toxin accumulation pattern was given long kui, ban zhi lian, tu fu ling, chi shao, che qian cao, bai mao gen each 30g, ku shen, huang bai, both 15 g. The pattern was followed and adjusted appropriately. One bag was decocted and taken daily. The control group was comprised of 15 cases. All used DDP (30-60 mg), each capsule equaling 10-20mg. In addition, the bladder was irrigated once a week. After 12 times, the bladder was irrigated once every month, and after 6 more times, the bladder was irrigated once every three months. The irrigation was then done only 4 more times. Results: partial remission of herb group and control groups respectively were 16, 6 subjects. 200552213 “An observation of the curative Effects of Chinese Herbs to Treat Acute Inflammation of the Mouth and Throat after radiation for Nose and Throat Cancer.” Journal: The Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine of EENT Conditions (2005, 13(3), p. 149-151.
Both groups contain 43 patients. The main study group used xuan shen, sheng di, tian hua fen, she gan, jie geng, jin yin hua, ban zhi lian, bai he, dang shen, bai zhu, fu ling each 15g, sha shen, mai dong, bai he she she cao each 30g, gan cao 10g. The pattern was followed and the formula was modified appropriately. During the course of one day, one packet was decocted and gargled in the mouth 5-8 times. The control groups used duo bei er gargle (bacteriolysin), which was also kept in the mouth 5-8 times per day. Both groups were also administered Vitamin B2 tablets three times per day orally. All used these treatments for 4-6 months. Both groups underwent radical radiation therapy. Conventional medicine breaks up this therapy; everyday 2Gy is administered for five consecutive weeks. The doses administered to the nose and throat (70-80Gy) are separated from with the doses administered to the neck (60-70Gy); this is done for 7-8 weeks. Results of herb group and control group: distinct effect 18, 1 respectively, slight effect 22, 18 respectively, no effect 3, 24 respectively, overall some effect 93.02%, 44.19% respectively (P<0.01).
