Manifestations of Phlegm

SYMPTOMS
TEMPORAL DISTORTIONS
-- chronic (but patient does not become debilitated)
-- history of recurrences often related to changes in weather
-- most commonly middle-aged and older patients
HOT & COLD
-- low-grade fever of subjective feverishness
-- localized sensations of heat
--localized sensations of cold (commonly on upper back)
HEAD & NECK
-- headache or heavy head
-- vertigo
-- constant drooling or excessive saliva
-- difficulty swallowing or sensation of something stuck in throat
CHEST & BACK
-- long-term stifling sensation (shortness of breath')
-- possible sudden pressure, heaviness, or pain
-- palpitations
EXTREMITIES
-- aching, distended feeling in hands and feet.
GENERAL
-- chronic, nonhealing sores
--localized areas of fullness
-- masses or nodes
MENTAL
-- poor concentration and memory
-- lethargy and hypersomnia or mania and insomnia
-- depression, paranoia, or hyperactivity (severe cases of phlegm only)
BOWELS
-- often sluggish and incomplete bowel movements, but stool not dry
-- stool may contain mucus.
PREFERENCES
-- dislikes greasy food and diary products (note that some patients have a paradoxical craving for these)
-- prefers bland foods and drinks
-- often sensitive to odors, especially petroleum-based products or perfumes
SIGNS
COMPLEXION & SKIN
-- dull (like have not washed)
-- face looks puffy; can be very oily
--obviously greasy skin
-- moist, unpleasant, secretions from the armpits, genitals, palms and soles
EYES
-- movements are slow
-- sockets are dark
-- often have exudate in the corners
BODY TYPE
-- thick (especially fingers and hands)
-- flesh is not muscular but soft and flabby.
TONGUE
-- usually white and greasy coating
-- body is relatively slack and flabby
PULSE
-- variable
-- often deep
-- often slippery, but could be wiry
-- also often soft, floating, and slippery
